Why fresh fruit?

So many people ask this question, so this time, I’d like to explain to all my Run 5.30 friends why there is always fresh fruit at the refreshment stands. Eating seasonal fresh fruit is a winning habit. Fruit is hydrating, rich in fiber, and it satisfies your hunger. It provides your body with simple sugars and powerful antioxidants which act like little army patrols for our cells, defending them from free radicals, safeguarding us from illness and cell degeneration.

Vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, polyphenols… These are some powerful antioxidizing substances, but… where can we find them?

We can find vitamin C in: citrus fruits, kiwi, peppers, broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes, and dark green leafy vegetables;

We can find vitamin E in: dried fruits, vegetable oils, especially seed oils, and grains;

Carotenoids: apricots, peaches, oranges, mangos, yellow and orange vegetables, carrots, tomatoes, broccoli, spinach and pumpkin;

Polyphenols are found in: blueberries, wild berries, citrus fruit, raspberries, cherries, plums, apricots, melons, apples, persimmons, black grapes, and green tea.

Having a bowl of fresh fruit for breakfast gives you a head start on your goal of 5 daily servings of fruits and vegetables, which goes a long way to staying healthy. Eating fresh fruit is one of the best things you can do for your body!
